Republican Principles
The Republican Party originated in 1854 as the political group dedicated to the freedom of the individual and the safeguard of inalienable rights. It has since remained steadfastly devoted to the basic American principles – free initiative, free enterprise and the dignity of the average man. Now more than ever, Republicans must uphold the deep significance of Constitutionalism, States’ Rights, encouragement of American Enterprise and restrained Government interference in the lives of its citizens.
History of the Republican Party
The Republican party, popularly known as the GOP from its earlier nickname of the Grand Old Party, was founded on November 27, 1854, in the home of David Wilmot in Towanda, Pennsylvania. Wilmot, who would later become a U.S. Senator, gathered his friends – U.S. Senator and future Secretary of War in the Lincoln Administration Simon Cameron, Congressman Thaddeus Stevens, Colonel Alexander McClure who would eventually be elected to the State Senate, as Chair of the newly created Republican State Committee and eventually serve as Assistant Adjutant General under Lincoln and Andrew Curtin who would later become Governor of Pennsylvania - to form regional Republican Clubs in their home counties. Pennsylvania takes great pride in the fact that the first Republican national convention was held in Pittsburgh on February 22, 1856. Later, Party delegates held their first nominating convention at Philadelphia’s Musical Fund Hall on June 17, 1856.
